YRE Lesson Plans for April and May


3/24/2013 "Spring Holidays"
We'll be learning about various spring holidays throughout history and the world, including Passover, Beltane, and Easter, and discussing the cultural significance of our modern 'Easter' holiday.

3/31/2013 "The Chalice"
We'll be learning about the history of our UU symbol, and making 'stained glass' window hangers for the children to take home.

4/7/2013 "Our Classroom"
Send your kiddos in clothes fit for a mess! We'll be painting on the theme of the flaming chalice, and the children's paintings will be used for a mosiac-mural to cover an entire wall in the YRE room.

4/14/2013 "Stewardship and Taxes"
We will be discussing stewardship of our community, and the role that taxes play in regards to the 7th UU Principle, which is respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

4/21/2013 "Freedom"

We will be unpacking the concept of freedom, with special attention paid to Emancipation Day (April 16th), and how the idea of freedom plays into the 4th and 5th UU Principles, which are the importance of a free and responsible search for truth and meaning and the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.

4/28/2013 "Law Day"

We will be discussing our laws and the democratic process, with special attention paid to Law Day (May 1st), and our legal system in the US vis-a-vis the 2nd UU Principle, which is the importance of justice, equity and compassion in human relations.

5/5/2013 "Human Rights"
As an extension of the previous weeks, we will be discussing human rights in the US, with special attention paid to our current struggles and how human rights illuminate the core of all seven UU Principles.

5/12/2013 "Mother's Day"

We will be discussing the history of Mother's Day and making tissue paper carnations in class.

5/19/2013 "Armed Forces Day/Memorial Day"

We will be discussing military service and the various branches and roles of the military in our society, with special attention paid to the history behind Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day. Students are encouraged to come with information and/or photos of servicepersons in their families. We will also be writing letters to send through the Million Thanks organization.

5/26/2013 "Trinity Sunday"

We will be discussing the Christian Trinity and the role this concept played in the history and formation of the Unitarian Universalist Church.
